State of Music Blogs 2010 Series on Perfect Porridge

11 Mar

If you haven’t been keeping up with Perfect Porridge’s State of the Music Blog series, you’re missing out.  This is no shameless self promotion – although Cake In 15 founder Staciaann did contribute here.    It’s a great little overview of what people in various parts of the music world think about the music industry, & more specifically about music blogs & their role in that industry.

Greg is putting this series of interviews together in preparation for his panel at SXSW this year.  It’s an interesting read, & there are definitely more than a few takes on the music industry & where it’s headed.  Greg describes the subject of his panel as this: “Just how important are music blogs to the industry today, is that prominence growing or fading, and how will new technologies and strategies impact the marketing mix in the coming year? Join prominent music bloggers, record label and PR firm executives to discuss the state of the industry and what’s around the corner.”

To get your own fix of the discussion without actually attending the festival, go here to read the various interviews he did in preparation.  We look forward to hearing how everything went down in Austin.  Minneapolis represent!

Jeremy Messersmith … on Daytrotter!

22 Feb

Unless you live in a cave or under a rock or maybe just don’t like music (huh?), then you’ve probably heard of Daytrotter.  I’d highly suggest creating an account on the site, as then you’re privy to the free downloads for bands like White Rabbits, Delta Spirit, Frightened Rabbit, & Bon Iver.  You can also check out local Minneapolitans like Jeremy Messermith, whose session just went up yesterday!  Do it, you’ll love it.  We promise.

Public Consumption Art Drop

1 Jan

Public Consumption, a project by the Rogue Citizen artist collective, was supposed to result in a sudden and mysterious drop of 40 works of art in public places today. If you are bummed that you couldn’t find any of the pieces around town though, don’t worry that you’ve missed out. After winning funding for the project through the first FEAST (Funding Emerging Arts with Sustainable Tactics, which we covered here) and publicity on facebook and l’etoile’s LOL/OMG blog, the drop did not happen as planned today. Several days ago, the members of Rogue Citizen were contacted by Anti-Graffiti Task Force of Minneapolis’ Finest, who threatened them with arrest and fines if the project went ahead as planned. Rogue Citizen has been in touch with Mary Altman, the City of Minneapolis Public Arts Administrator to see about getting the proper permits through the city, and on top of that, proof of insurance for the work if the city requires it. All of that will cost more than the $700 grant (which has already been spent to produce the work), not to mention delay the process indefinitely. Doing things legally, especially at a time when cities are strapped for resources and is looking to capitalize on any public interation is often out of reach for your average arts collective, so an actual public date to consume this art is not announced until things are sorted out with city hall. Moral of the story, if you do happen to find a painting on the street, just take it home with you and don’t tell the cops, mmkay?

In perfectly legal and above board happenings, the artists of Rogue Citizen will be present at the Nomad Wold Pub on January 8th, accompanying a killer line-up of Phantom Tails, To Kill A Petty Bourgeoisie, Junkyard Seraphim and Zombie Season. Come on out to support the temporary autonomy that is art and music.

What To Do Tonight: Minnesota Music Mondays

21 Dec

Once long ago, in days of yore, music geeks gathered from far and wide at the Nomad World Pub for the “Spins”. Sponsored by HowWasTheShow.com, the Spins was a chance to throw on a geek-selected playlist, have a drink and talk music, do funny things and chill out. The Spins are no more, merely a whistful tear in many a music-head’s eye, but Grumpy’s NE is reviving the spirit of the thing with their Minnesota Music Mondays. Last week, City Pages’ Andrea Swensson and Ben Clark spun the tunes, and this week, Staciaann of Cakein15 is picking the playlist! True to Cakein15 fashion, she’ll be bringing cupcakes, which go great with a pitcher of Hamms, and the tunes will be all local, including new and old holiday tracks from folks like Roma Di Luna, Haley Bonar and Low. Swing on in and raise a glass to toast the season from 7-9 tonight, Grumpy’s NE, 2200 4th St NE.

The Big Pink at the 7th Street Entry

2 Dec

The Big Pink’s sold out show at the Entry on November 25 was a bashing of the senses.  Complete overload in strobe lights and fog.  Not quite a photographer’s dream, but still interesting to see all that flash and bang crammed into that little room.  Local newbies CLAPS and indie-rockers Crystal Antlers opened.

Caroline Smith covering The Replacements

In case you missed it, Caroline Smith covering “Androgynous” was one of the highlights of the Tribute to the Replacements at First Avenue last week.  So of course, CakeIn15 has video…
