Jeremy Messesmith Supper Club Tour

22 Sep

The ever-dapper and funny Jeremy Messersmith made his second visit to the Cake Shop last night as part of his cross-country Supper Club Tour, which may be one of the best models for getting fed, listening to great music and making new friends there is. It’s a simple proposition -we had the space, Jeremy brought the tunes, and fans brought the food, and the food that people brought was delicious and overflowing, with a couple particularly Minnesotan dishes; SPAM bites (crispy outside, cheesy deliciousness inside) and s’mores on a stick. It was a great (and filling) way to be reminded about how music can keep on giving back to us.

Jeremy played for about an hour in between nibbling and chatting, working through old favorites, new tunes and covers – Robyn this time, not Snoop Dogg. He chatted about how he got into singing (after focusing on playing guitar, someone told him, “Hey, for a guitarist you have a pretty good voice”) and what he’s learned through his career (quoting Dan Wilson, “Never underestimate the importance is a well sung line.”) Jeremy also teased the audience about his new record, coming out next year, saying that although he had already chosen a name, he wasn’t going to tell folks just yet. Most of all, he just played great songs, funny, sharp, and witty ones, and heart-breakingly sad and poignant ones. He didn’t dwell too much on the sadness, because, life, he said, “is pretty fucking awesome.” We’ll eat and sing to that.
