S. Carey at the Lake Harriet Bandshell

27 Aug

In a sure sign that summer is coming to an end, the State Fair is in full swing, today is the first day of school and last Friday was the last day of‘s Music & Movies at the Lake Harriet Bandshell. Along with the ever excellent Coen Bros. flick O Brother, Where Art Thou? Friday’s closing entertainment featured S. Carey, the solo project of Bon Iver drummer Sean Carey. “Solo” is the wrong thing to say though, because not only is S. Carey a full band, Sean brought along a lot of friends, including a brass quintet and Minneapolis sax mainstay Mike Lewis, playing with the group for the first time ever. Fortunately, he likes music and music likes him, so it all worked out. In a night that marked their first show in a year (having spent most of it touring with Bon Iver) S. Carey moved through tunes from their first 2012 full-length, All We Grow, and this year’s 4-song EP, Hoyas, as well as a The Tallest Man on Earth cover and this joke – “Why is camping crazy? Because it’s in-tents!” Trust us, the music was a lot better. To wit, and in case you missed out, here’s their performance of “In The Dirt” from the middle of the set. Happy listening, and happy end-of-summer!
