Zoo Animal at the Cake Shop

19 Aug

What do you get when you pair up Zoo Animal, Grant Cutler and a full house in the middle of the day? Jokes like this: “I got fired from an orange juice factory. They told me I couldn’t concentrate.” Fortunately, music and not comedy is Holly Newsom’s bread and butter – although it was pretty funny when she announced before “Baybee,” a biting tune about your desires making you feel worse as well as better, that “I wrote this song while I was making money.” It was also pretty hilarious when she noted that Grant could take the jokes because he was “tougher than a fish taco.” So maybe Holly should be in comedy, with her bone dry and self-effacing zingers, like a more animated Steven Wright. A Steven Wright who can wring the neck of a Fender and squeeze the gasping blues out of rock and roll tunes. In between feeding her stage banter addiction, Holly did just that, swooping towards and away from the microphone and leaving notes hanging in the air as Grant provided atmospheric accompaniment in an elegant and intimate set, no matter how many jokes about it Holly cracked.

So if you missed Zoo Animal at the Cake Shop tonight, you missed it. Just keep this thought in mind – next time you do go to a Zoo Animal show, if you want the good times to keep rolling, pay attention to all the noises that Holly might make. They all mean something.
