This year the First Avenue mainroom turned out to be no match for just one night of Current supporters. So the station hosted two nights instead, hopefully allowing more fans in to celebrate their seventh year in existence.
Night two was the better of the two nights (in my humble opinion), showcasing MN artists Haley Bonar, Sims, The Suicide Commandos, and Poliςa. Bonar started the night off in a low key way, playing some of her songs from her new and popular 2011 album Golder. Lucky for listeners, the songs are just as gorgeous live as they are on the album. Sims was up next, having just flown in from being on tour with Doomtree. Sims didn’t let jet lag get him down as his enthusiasm drove the crowd into a nice little frenzy. Next up were punk popsters The Suicide Commandos, who tore down the house with their single Burn it Down. A nice surprise came when members of The Suburbs also joined them onstage. The night ended with a fanstastic set by much-hyped (but rightfully so) band Poliςa – who ripped through a set of tunes off their yet-to-be-released album Give You the Ghost.
Overall it was a great night for Minnesota Music, 89.3 the Current, and all those who support our scene. Congrats, Current, on seven years of kicking ass!
