John Megas – SIGNALS

John Megas SIGNALS Trailer from Carl Atiya Swanson on Vimeo.

Painter and printmaker John Megas, known for his “Paint On Demand” blog Panda Licking on a Lightbulb and for his writing at MPLSart.com, will hold his debut solo show “Signals” at Gallery 122 at Hang It.

The opening reception on Friday, November 11, 7pm-10pm, is co-sponsored by l’etoile magazine and will feature a selection of live music performed by violinist Shannon Frid (Cloud Cult, Me & My Arrow).

“Signals” comprises a new body of paintings on wood that explore a landscape transformed by the presence of power lines, transformers and sub-stations that often go un-noticed in modern life. “Once you start to see these things, it’s impossible not to notice them,” says Megas of the electronic elements that inhabit his dreamy, floating landscapes. “But they are also things we look past and pretend aren’t there. It’s an interesting thing that we’ve decided to believe together; they power everything yet we try and look past them and most of us don’t understand what they are.” Both observed from real locations and existing in constructed landscapes, “Signals” questions the relationships of nature and geometry, power and dependence. Artist and critic Diane Thodos notes, “The “Signals” pieces are quite ominous, mysterious, they have a strange power of meaning behind them- somewhere between the monstrous and the otherworldly.”
