Jagjaguwar FTW

15 Jun

It’s been an exciting couple of days for local artists and the Bloomington, Indiana-based record label Jagjaguwar. Yesterday, My Old Kentucky Blog debuted “Right Away”, the first track from Peter Wolf Crier‘s forthcoming record, Garden of Arms. Peter Pisano and Brian Moen are two guys we couldn’t like more, personally and professionally, and the looping, fractured opening track shows how far the band has grown since their debut, Inter-Be, and all that playing they have done with building up sound onstage is paying off for them now.

The other big news has to do with Jagjaguwar’s brightest star, Bon Iver, and the forthcoming Bon Iver, Bon Iver disc. The full stream has been available for a while now (and The Electric Fetus is having a listening party on Monday the 29th), but the video for the lead single “Calgary” was released today via Pitchfork. Andre Durand and Dan Huiting of MPLS.TV directed the effort, which takes Bon Iver’s bucolic mythology of awakening to a gorgeous place.

For both bands, the new layered sounds make a lot of sense as a way to follow up emotional and immediate records that took on their own life and touched a lot of people. With this one-two punch, Jagjaguwar stakes serious claim to a new folk soundscape of harmony and experimentation, becoming more enveloping and challenging, which can be done because of the foundations of Inter-Be and the eternal For Emma, Forever Ago.
