The Lonely Island

10 May

It seems like so long ago (2005!) since Andy Samberg and The Lonely Island joined the ailing, limping and unfunny Saturday Night Live. In retrospect, it’s kind of amazing that a single video, the epic nerdcore stoner-quest of “Lazy Sunday” precipitated such a turnaround for the franchise, but seriously, that was it. All of a sudden, Saturday Night Live existed in the web age, and the Digital Shorts like “Natalie Raps“, “Dick In A Box” and “I’m On A Boat” (coupled with a pretty excellent core cast, the brilliance of Tina Fey and the opportune, if terrible emergence of Sarah Palin) actually made SNL funny and relevant again. The Lonely Island crew (Samberg along with writers Akiva Schaffer & Jorma Taccone) are out with a new record of funny stuff and songs today and here’s the lead single off Turtleneck and Chain, which has the crew doing what they do, trying so hard to be cool and getting derailed. All we have to say about “Jack Sparrow (feat. Michael Bolton)” is that Bolton can still lay down a huge, cheesy hook when you need him too, and he’s in no danger of stealing Julia Roberts’ thunder.
