Next At The Cake Shop: Pillars And Tongues

3 Mar

We have had a brief hiatus in February and March from shows at the Cake Shop, as we’ve hunkered down with school, getting over winter and the impending chaos that is South By Southwest, but we are excited to announce that our next house show will be coming up on Sunday, April 3rd. Chicago trio Pillars and Tongues will be setting up here to play a special 4pm show, their first visit to the Twin Cities since the spring of 2009, when they opened up for Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy at the Walker Art Center. The trio just released a Daytrotter Session for you get a taste of their sound, and we’ll let the Daytrotter crew describe the effects of their music to you:

“…Pillars and Tongues start to play and, even in a minimalist scenario, with dynamics here, there and everywhere, the sounds reach us like a comet, impacting the side of our head with what we’d like to hear as wisdom and wilderness, the wild static between the stations that we’re always hearing.”

With their expansive, plaintive mix of folk music, swelling harmonies and textured rhythms, if you are seeking something like our Spirits of the Red City or Dark Dark Dark Cake Shop shows, come on over for Pillars and Tongues, a Sunday afternoon in the house of music.
