What You Missed: Scott Hutchison and Josh Ritter

23 Feb

CakeIn15 headed down to First Avenue last Saturday because a) anyone who has listened to Frightened Rabbit‘s Liver! Lung! FR! knows that frontman Scott Hutchison can hold it down solo and b) Josh Ritter & the Royal City Band put on a show full of puppy-dog exuberance that channels something of the E Street Band, being both non-stop energy and fun along with musical seriousness. The audience, a mix of under-21 girls gazing up at Ritter’s gleaming smile and plaid-clad hipsters channeling the Scottish cold got as much as they could take over the course of the night, with Hutchison hammering out songs to sing along with, including a “Purple Rain” lead-in and Ritter and co. playing a solid, almost 2hour long set that included covers of the Talking Heads and the Velvet Underground. Ritter also got some extra cheers when he dedicated “Thin Blue Flame” to the people of Egypt and a good portion of the crowd yelled out, “And Wisconsin!” Hutchison is listed as a “very special guest” on Ritter’s website and the two of them obviously had great chemistry, as this Filter double interview goes to show, and it was great to hang out with them for an evening.
