What You Missed: Caroline Smith and Jesse Schuster
10 Jan
Coming off a little winter tour as Caroline Smith and the Good Night Sleeps (with drummer Arlen Peiffer) Caroline and bassist Jesse Schuster stopped by the Cake Shop for an intimate doubleheader. Although they had driven from New Orleans to Chicago and back home over two days and were fueled mostly by minestrone, red wine and adrenaline, they were lovely and gracious, playing new arrangements of older tunes, some choice covers and new material. Not only is there is a new Caroline Smith and the Good Night Sleeps record nearing release, but Caroline and Jesse have a side project along with Marshall LaCount of Dark Dark Dark on clarinet, Kailyn Spencer of A Night in the Box on violin and flautist Colleen Harris, and “Bear and Fox” is one of those tunes. As lovely as it was with the two of them, we can only hope that we get to see some shows with that full combo. The duo heads out for a West Coast swing starting on the 15th, so let your friends out there know that as much love as they give out to those two, they’ll get it back.
For your edification, here are a couple videos from both the 4pm and 7pm shows for your enjoyment and stay tuned for upcoming shows at the Cake Shop to keep on supporting local music!
