We Rock Long Distance

“We Rock Long Distance” – Kickstarter Video from We Rock Long Distance on Vimeo.

Here’s something that came across our inbox that we can get behind and can probably use as much of a push as it can get: We Rock Long Distance is an ambitious film-making project that is working with three local hip-hop and spoken word artists, M.anifest, Maria Isa and Tou SaiKo Lee. These three artists all came to Minnseota from different parts of the world, from Ghana, Puerto Rico and Laos by way of Thailand, and We Rock Long Distance is working with them to record their experiences as they go back to their countries of origin to work with mentors, family members and build an exchange that strengthens their artistic practice. All these artist are already doing social justice work, with youth, empowerment and countering stereotypes, and just watching M.anifest’s grandfather in the trailer, J.H. Kwabena Nketia, professor of African ethnomusicology, you can’t help but be inspired. You can help them raise their ever-so-tiny film budget of $8,000 at their Kickstarter page, which is worth every penny if you get to see more of Professor Nketia dancing.
