The Antlers‘ 2009 release Hospice was by far and away one of my favorite records of last year, a slow-burning heartbreaker from frontman Peter Silberman that got in your head and belly and wouldn’t let go. The IFC channel (who hired Craig Finn of The Hold Steady to do a series of artist interviews down at SXSW this year) debuted the video for a standout track “Sylvia” today, a sepia-toned affair directed by Trey Hock and inspire, in part by D.W. Griffith’s 1919 short “Broken Blossoms”, another tale of violence and doomed love. IFC isn’t embedding anything, so click here to see the video. The band is offering up the video as a download along with a two-song EP titled New York Hospitals, recorded in 2008. Hopefully The Antlers have new material they are working on (but, as with Bon Iver‘s For Emma, Forever Ago, a full follow up to a record born out of intense loneliness and isolation is no mean feat) so catch them this coming Tuesday at the Varsity Theater with Phantogram, and cop the EP with the app below!
