Caroline Smith & the Good Night Sleeps at Mill City

Caroline Smith & the Good Night Sleeps are one of those bands that seem new each time I see them perform.  This was especially true at Mill City this past week, as Caroline Smith took the stage as part of Mill City’s summer concert series.  Smith & her impressive band gave us a peek at some new material, played some covers, & of course some of their best tunes from their CD Backyard Tent Set.

For such a young band, the talent levels are impressive.  Smith’s songwriting is mature and tells stories of heartache, tough relationships, father-daughter interactions, and being torn from one’s family.  The music, however, remains upbeat and familiar – taking edgy classic Americana folk music & blending it with a rock beat.  This allows most songs to stay on the “indie-pop” side of the spectrum, as opposed to pigeon-holing them into a pure folk genre.  Adding fuel to this fire is fantastic drummer Arlen Peiffer, who also drums for Cloud Cult, & bassist Jesse Schuster, who also plays in Lucy Michelle & the Velvet Lapelles.

Because the band does only have one formal release, I was a little nervous as to how they planned to fill two hours at Mill City.  Part of the way they filled the time was by singing a few cover songs.  The cover songs chosen pushed the band into a new level, as they deftly covered everything from Rilo Kiley, to Rod Stewart, to the beautiful tune by Taylor Swift – as evidenced by the video below:

According to their MySpace, CSGNS’s next show isn’t until September 11 at the Entry with Most Serene Republic.  I’d highly suggest checking them out as soon as possible.
