Halfway Across the World: Venice Biennale

8 Jun

Michelangelo Pistoleto's "Seventeen One Less" (Andrea Pattaro/AFP/Getty Image)sThe Venice Biennale, SXSW of the art world (it’s actually much, much bigger, with millions- probably more- of global art market dollars invested) kicked off this week. The Biennale is unique in that individual nations have their own pavilions intended to show the best their country have to offer. In the US Pavilion, stalwart Bruce Nauman has a display of his contemporary sculpture and classic works, including “The True Artist Helps The World By Revealing Mystic Truths (Window or Wall Sign)”. Other highlights so far include performances by Yoko Ono, a new film British artist Steve McQueen entitled Giardini whose last effort Hunger was critically acclaimed and artists Elmgreen and Dragset taking over the Danish and Nordic Pavilion with nudes and floating corpses all around the theme of “The Art Collector”. The Guardian has some of the best coverage, so go check out world-stage dreaming here.
