Eyedea & Abilities Are Back!

20 May

eyedeabythethroatAttending Highland Park Senior High School right around the turn of the millennium, Eyedea’s battle talent was hallway legend, a little silver screen shine in dull linoleum and lockers. Eyedea & Abilities’ 2001 record First Born kept me company out in Los Angeles and was a better philosophical humanity primer than 101 Mythology classes I barely made it through.

And so it is gives me great joy that Rhymesayers Entertainment announced this week that they will be releasing a new Eyedea & Abilities titled By The Throat on July 21. Coming back from his chimeric incarnations as rapper Oliver Hart, punk rocker in Carbon Carousel and jazz freestylist in Face Candy, the single “This Story” brings Eyedea back to his acerbic, analytically knifing self, backed by hyper electronics from DJ Abilities and an echo that should be fun to replicate live. It’s fast, sharp and smart, and you can get it via the Rhymesayers website or the good folks at Switchblade Comb are also hosting it.

Of course, you can catch Eyedea & Abilities this weekend at Soundset 09, and when the record officially drops this summer, they will be on tour with the annual Rock the Bells hip hop extravaganza, so we may have to wait for another hometown show until their fall headlining tour. Hell, we’ve waited 5 years since the last record, E&A, so what another couple weeks, right?
