Cake In 15 Goes to Record Store Day

18 Apr

433690With photog Staciaann at Coachella with Cloud Cult (follow her on Twitter @Staciaann) it fell to me to head down to the Electric Fetus for Record Store Day. It was a good thing I pulled up right at 9, the doors were just opening and the line of about 40 people who were waiting was just moving. The crowd immediately fell upon the special vinyl releases, packed in like a rugby scrum, calling out for titles like a commodities broker. Muscling up to the bin, I got got a good handful before tempering myself. Unfortunately the Bruce Springsteen 7″ and the Sonic Youth/Beck 7″ were gone and I didn’t see the Green Day Dookie re-issue, but here is the rundown of the takings:

The Thermals/Thao and the Get Down Stay Down split 7″
Tom Waits Live 7″
The Flaming Lips/Stardeath and White Dwarves/Black Keys split 7″
The Dead Weather 7″
Blitzen Trapper War is Placebo 7″
Grizzly Bear Live at KCRW 7″ (which I had been told they weren’t going to have, so I know someone who will be happy about that)
Elvis Perkins in Dearland 7″
Bob Dylan Dreamin’ of You 7″
Leonard Cohen Suzanne 7″
Radiohead No Surprises EP
Radiohead Fake Plastic Trees EP

The speed at which some of the wax went was definitly frustrating to some people showing up later, but all things considered, not a bad haul. I may swing back and see if I can’t get more of the Radiohead singles, but as EPs, they were the priciest of the bunch. But totally worth it, and totally worth spending money at the Fetus. Events there today include Chris Cornell at 2:30, so if you want to ask annoying questions about Timbaland feel free and the Bad Plus at 4, and there are events all day at Down in The Valley, 5th Element, Treehouse and Eclipse Records.
