Now that the brains behind the always-free, live music haven the 331 Club in NorthEast have taken over the old Matty B’s restaurant downtown and christened it the 501 Club, tonight’s a good night to check it out. Cyn Collins, West Bank author and mainstay has curated a KFAI Radio sponsored show of old-timey programming featuring The Floorbirds duo, the full string band False Hearts and wandering souls Ode to the Rhodes. That last band is seems to be in a bit of an identity flux- their name has been spelled Roddes, Rodies, Roddies at any given point. What I can tell you about them is that they are the Overby siblings from Sutton, Alaska who are part of the Spirits of the Red City/Absent Arch cadre of Americana neo-folkies and troubadours, and from their swinging-and-stomping work in those outfits, they shouldn’t be missed before they head back up north. Plus, I have seen Jason Overby stand on tables at the Bedlam Theatre and deliver rousing folk songs that would make Utah Phillips proud. So come check it out, sample the drinks and menu and look at John Grider‘s stencil-driven, graffiti-inspired art that is the inaugural show in the space. The power of free music and the folk assembled, those Wobblies were on to something.
